Mr. Milford is also the President of “The Smile”. He and his wife Patty are the founders of this wonderful charity organization.
Mr. Al Milford is a Sr. Principal Systems Engineer with HARRIS for 37 years. The 
Milford's have a son, Steven, who has Down syndrome. They recognize he will require support and a healthy and happy living environment when they become unable to continue to care for him. In researching placement in the future, they learned the “waiting list” for people with disabilities is insurmountable! Instead of complaining about it, they decided to do something about it.
Mr. Milford along with his wife, Patty, have worked tirelessly to bring “The Smile”, a 501(c)3 charity, to fruition. Their dream is to help others, like their son, who deserve a place to learn, grow and thrive with others like them.


Executive Director

Mrs. Patty Milford is a Paraprofessional, in a classroom for students with multiple disabilities, for the Jefferson Township, Board of Education. She has also worked in the Hopatcong, New Jersey School System for children with “Special Needs”. Patty Milford is very devoted and understands the special and unique developmental and environmental needs that these children require.


Mrs. Milford, along with her husband Al, founded “Smile” which is a 501-(c)(3) charity for young adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The experience that Patty Milford brings to “Smile” will help make this charity different from others. This is because both Patty and her husband Al, have a son named Steven with Down Syndrome. It is because of Steven that the Milfords have recognized the need to help their own child, Steven, as well as others living with "Special Needs". “Smile” is the Milford's vision and commitment to all that seek a home and place of camaraderie for young adults who need assistance in their daily lives.


Vice President

Mr. Chris Colabella is the Managing Partner of the Law Offices of Gruber, Colabella, Liuzza, & Thompson. He received his Juris Doctorate from Widener University School of Law, Wilmington, Delaware in 1988 and his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rutgers University in 1985. Mr. Colabella is a practicing attorney since 1988.


Mr. Colabella is a community-minded individual, volunteering for charitable organizations for many years. As a board member attorney and project volunteer for local charities, Mr. Colabella has established a great deal of experience dealing with the complexities of non-profit organizations.



Mr. John Kedash is a Strategic Relationship Manager with the Corporate Learning Group at Harvard Business Publishing. He has been working in the technology field for 30 years since receiving his Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from Rowan University.


In addition to serving on the Board of Smile, Mr. Kedash has also serves on the Board of Grace – The Church on the Mount – in Morris County NJ, and previously served on the Board of Meadowbrook Church in Bergen County NJ. He also volunteers with a local Chapter of Prison Fellowship, visiting inmates in Sussex County Correctional Facilities.



Mr. Salvatore Guglielmello is a Senior Business Analyst with KMK Consulting, Inc. and is currently providing services to Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Oncology Division. Sal has served as a volunteer for numerous organizations including Hopatcong Recreation Commission, Hopatcong Hawks Soccer Club, Hopatcong Drama Club, and Grace – The Church on the Mount.


Sal hopes to be able to utilize his past experiences to help SMILE grow so that more special needs individuals can live in a safe and happy community with one another.


Board Member

Mr. Michael Roome is an Associate Director with AT&T Corporation with 30 years of experience in Finance, Marketing and Technology. He received his Master of Business Administration Degree from Wilkes University and his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Ramapo College with a dual concentration in Finance and Marketing. Mr. Roome has been continually involved in community service. He served on the Roxbury Township Board of Adjustment for 6 years. Mr. Roome has also been a coach for over 20 youth sports teams. He has volunteered with numerous organizations such as local food banks and soup kitchens as well as the NJ Special Olympics, Epilepsy Foundation and various other organizations. Mr. Roome joined the SMILE Board in early 2016. He and his wife Laurie have seven children and reside in Roxbury Twp., New Jersey.


Kim Koppenaal


Kim originally joined the SMILE team in June 2016, serving as Administrator until October 2018. She returned to her position as Administrator in May 2019. She holds a Master’s Degree in Special Education from East Stroudsburg University and has 25 years of experience working in educational, day program, vocational, and residential settings. In addition to her responsibilities as SMILE Administrator, she currently holds a teaching position at a private school in Morris County for students with special needs. She is a proud mom of two adult sons and a teenage daughter with whom she lives in Mt. Olive Township.



Director of Community Affairs

Susan Gallagher serves as the Director of Community Affairs for SMILE.  She began her career within the nonprofit community as a Direct Support Professional and quickly found her calling. Susan has since served as a Residential Manager, Senior Coordinator of Recreation, a Special Olympic Coach, an Administrative Assistant, and a Support Coordinator.
Her passion and commitment has led to the support and empowerment of many individuals with developmental disabilities. Susan continues to strive for the provision of quality services and to assist in the education and support of persons with developmental disabilities. Susan received her dual bachelor degree in elementary and special education from East Stroudsburg University.
